What Sleep Apnea Really Looks Like

Signs & Symptoms to Watch For

Sleep apnea often goes unnoticed because many of its symptoms occur during sleep. These are the most common signs patients mention—many of which dentists spot first.

Symptoms list:
• Loud, nightly snoring
• Morning headaches
• Daytime fatigue, falling asleep unintentionally
• Trouble concentrating
• Waking up gasping or choking
• Dry mouth in the morning
• Teeth grinding or clenching
• TMJ discomfort
• Scalloped tongue or large tongue size

Why Dentists Play a Role

How Dental Professionals Detect Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea isn’t only diagnosed in a sleep lab—dentists often spot early warning signs during routine exams. Certain oral structures directly affect your airway.

Key indicators dentists look for:
• Large tongue size
• Scalloped tongue edges
• Enlarged tonsils
• Narrow airway
• Grinding or worn teeth
• Jaw positioning issues
• High BMI or restricted airway anatomy

How Testing Works

Getting Tested for Sleep Apnea

Testing for sleep apnea starts right here in our office. There’s no guesswork and no need to figure it out on your own.

Process:
In-office exam & symptom review
We start with a detailed conversation about your sleep, medical history, and daytime symptoms. Then we perform an airway-focused dental exam, looking at your tongue, tonsils, jaw position, and signs of grinding.

Diagnostic sleep study arranged through our office
If your exam suggests sleep apnea, we help coordinate a formal sleep study through our office and partnering sleep physicians. This gives us an accurate diagnosis and severity level.

Results reviewed with a sleep doctor
A board-certified sleep physician interprets your study and confirms your diagnosis.

Next steps: focusing on oral appliance therapy
Once we have your results, we sit down together to review what they mean and, when appropriate, discuss custom oral appliance therapy as a comfortable, dentist-guided treatment option. We’ll also talk through any other options that may fit your case.
